Channel Nine's Junior Weather Watch Program brings the fascinating world of weather from the studio to the classroom.
It's a fun and educational weather program where children become part of the National Nine News team - recording important temperature and rainfall information for inclusion in the nightly bulletin.
Every term 5 schools from around WA are selected to be part of the program.
Channel Nine supplies the equipment - a digital thermometer and rain gauge and I visit the schools to explain to the children how the equipment works and what they will be doing during their term as Junior Weather Watchers. I also talk to the class about the weather, what's involved in my job and answer any questions they may have.
Recently we've started something very exciting - arriving at the schools in the Channel Nine helicopter! The children get a chance to explore the helicopter and speak to the pilot and one of our news cameramen so they are able to get a full understanding of how television news works.
Then during the term, the schools send in three temperature readings and two rainfall readings every day via email or fax - which I include in the evening weather segment.
